2001 IAA SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIPS 2001
MITCH WARD STUNS LARRY HUBER IN FINALS
CLAIMS SINGLES TITLE

Winner - Mitch Ward Mitch Ward, the tournament's top-seed, entered the championship match needing to defeat Larry Huber, the tournament's hottest bowler, twice to gain honors as the IAA's 2001 Singles champion. Already falling victim to Huber in the quarterfinals 257 -227 of the double elimination match-play finals, Ward powered his way to a 280 - 268 victory forcing the final match in which he emerged with a 226 - 205 win. Huber, who qualified ninth for the 10-person finals, immediately found his game as he defeated defending champion John Riffle 265- 264, Dirk Nicksic 299 - 236, Ward, and second-seeded Bob Petitt 246 -185 to advance to the finals. Ward rebounded from the early defeat with victories over Nicksic 267 - 203, Ed Wleklinski 256 -248, and Petitt 235 - 205 to setup the anticiapted rematch with Huber.

Runner-up - Larry HuberWard collected $225 for his first-place finish while Huber was awarded $155 for second. Other cashers were Petitt (3rd - $125), Wleklinski (4th $95), Nicksic (5th $80) and Steve Hoshaw (5th $80). The event held at Plaza Lanes attracted 33 bowlers. The field was narrowed to the top ten after three games of qualifying. Others to qualify inlcuded George Wickhorst, Marty Vogel, and Keith Winston.

 

Door prizes were awarded to Mike DellaRocco (IAA Sweater), Ed Wleklinski (IAA Pullover), Greg Steapleton (IAA T-shirt/Hat), Mitch Ward (IAA Sweatshirt), George Huber (IAA Golf Balls), Rick Woloszyn (IAA Blanket), John Skrundz (IAA Hat / T-Shirt), and Bill Pitchford (IAA Jacket).
